Car clubs are a great alternative to car hire / rental. There is no point hiring / renting a vehicle when you can use one of London's car clubs.

What actually is a car club?
A way to save thousands of pounds on your motoring costs.
A car club has its own fleet of cars located in convenient locations around a city, available to book on a pay-as-you-go basis. These cars can be booked for little as half an hour, an hour, a day or as long as you want.
The idea is that you have access to a car near you which you can drive as if it's your own, but without the financial burden and hassle of actually owning it.

How does it all work?
Car clubs work on a membership basis, so in order to book the cars you first need to sign up as a member. This is a quick and painless process usually involving a conference call with the DVLA and payment of an joining fee. On becoming a member, you are issued with a membership number, PIN, and membership card. With these details you can make bookings online or by phone (at the last minute or in advance).
To unlock the car you simply swipe your membership card against a card reader on the windscreen, enter your PIN into an in-car terminal and drive off. The in-car terminal automatically records your mileage. Each booking comes with a certain amount of free mileage, after which you will be charged by the mile.

Is there a car near me?
Should I join one?
If you require a car every day of the week, then the answer is probably 'no'. However, if you are a relatively low-use driver, making 2 or 3 trips a week, then joining a car club can save you money. By simply paying by the hour, you don't have to worry about depreciation, insurance, road tax, repairs or cleaning as it's all included. Parking is stress-free too because each club car has it's own parking bay which no-one else is allowed to park in. If you keep within the fuel allowance, then you won't have to pay a penny for that either!
Want to keep your own car but require a second car now and again? This is a common reason for joining a car club. Becoming a member may allow you to ditch that second car which has been sat there collecting dust and quietly costing you a lot of money.
For business use. Car clubs are rapidly becoming popular with businesses wishing to save money on business travel. From one-man bands to large public and private organisations, they are ditching the company car(s), private mileage allowance schemes, and opting to take up corporate car club membership.
