A likely place for a car club? No.

What are car clubs all about?

Are you a car club virgin?

Car clubs are springing up all over the UK and are increasingly becoming the preferred alternative to private car ownership.

A car club essentially owns a network of vehicles parked in reserved bays around a city, which are available to hire on a 'per hour' basis by members of the car club.

Anyone with a driving license can join a car club and they can be used for private or business trips.

The cars (and sometimes vans) are generally booked online or via a call centre, and unlocked using a smartcard. Once inside the vehicle, a computer system requests a PIN and then logs all details relating to that journey.

At the end of the journey the car is returned to the reserved spot where it came from, ready for the next member.

What do they cost?

Each car club sets its own pricing but generally there is a joining fee and then you simply pay by the hour. If you want a car or van for a day trip or longer, cheaper daily rates are usually available.

Some car clubs include a certain amount of fuel free (e.g. 50 miles free) and charge a set amount thereafter, other car clubs simply charge by the mile from the very start of your journey.

Insurance tends to be included, but options are often available to reduce your excess for a fee.

Several major UK cities now have a car club. To check if there's one where you live take a look at each car club operator's website (most allow you to search by postcode).

Alternatively Carplus, the national charity promoting responsible car use, has put together all car club locations and has a handy website which allows to you search by postcode.
